I WANT INMeet your instructor,
Jennifer Brummer
I’ve spent most of my life as a people pleaser—always prioritizing others’ feelings over my own, and fearing that expressing how I really felt might upset or hurt someone. This often led to a cycle where I either kept quiet or, when the weight became too much to bear, would have explosive reactions after suppressing my feelings for far too long. If you’ve ever felt trapped in that pattern—where it’s either silence or outbursts—then you might see yourself in my story.
In 2020, my world was turned upside down. My children were home from school due to the pandemic, and I was dealing with the immense grief of losing my 65 year old father to cancer after an eight-year battle. The world around me felt chaotic, and I was struggling to find my footing. For a year and a half, I felt alone in my grief, overwhelmed and completely isolated.
It was during this time that I stumbled upon Marshall Rosenberg’s book: "Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life.” For the first time in my life, it felt as though someone had articulated a truth that resonated deeply with my very core.
As I dove deeper into Nonviolent Communication, I began to transform. I learned to identify the root causes of my discomfort, to understand my needs, and when necessary, to communicate them in a way that was clear yet kind. It was like discovering a new language—one that allowed me to engage with others without fear or frustration.Â
This journey not only brought me inner peace but also reignited a passion I had always had: bringing people together through a common language. Before discovering Nonviolent Communication, I had been deeply passionate about teaching English as a Second Language. My background in ESL was driven by a love for connecting with people from different cultures and helping them find their voice in a new language. I found great fulfillment in guiding others to communicate effectively and confidently. Now, with NVC, my passion for bringing people together has evolved into a mission to nurture understanding and compassion.
Currently, I’m on the certified NVC trainer path through the Center for Nonviolent Communication, and I’m also working for GROKtheWorld, a company dedicated to making NVC engaging and accessible for all ages and abilities. At GROK, I’ve had the exciting opportunity to help develop a children’s curriculum aimed at introducing NVC to elementary school classrooms. It’s been the most exciting project I’ve ever been part of.
What I’ve learned through NVC is that our struggles can be a catalyst for incredible growth and change. I’m here today because I believe that if NVC could change my life, it can change yours too. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unheard, or stuck, know that there’s a way out. My journey might resonate with you, and I’m excited to share these tools and insights because I truly believe they can help you, just as they’ve helped me.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope you’ll find, as I did, that with the right tools, you can transform your relationships and find a deep sense of inner clarity and peace.
